This week's focus on challenging algorithmic oppression and understanding the fundamentals of web development has been both enlightening and empowering. The recommended readings and activities also deeply illustrated how algorithms and digital infrastructure shape societal norms and individual experiences.
Broussard's (2023) discussion on "algorithmic auditing" provides us with a method to examine and improve algorithms to ensure fairness and equality. This process not only challenges the existing biases within digital systems but also advocates for a more inclusive approach to technological development. Similarly, Davis et al. (2021) introduced the concept of "algorithmic reparations," which breaks the boundaries of traditional fairness by using computational tools to address historical injustices. These ideas emphasize how digital tools can be utilized for social justice, underlining the importance of critically examining digital platforms and the algorithms that support them, and highlighting the need for a fairer digital environment, reshaping my understanding of technology's role in society.
This week also introduced practical skills in web development, focusing on HTML and CSS as fundamental tools for creating digital artifacts. The hands-on learning experience through the Codecademy course provided me with a basic understanding of web structure and style, enhancing my ability to create and critically analyze web content. Although coding remains challenging for me, I also experienced its enjoyment. At the same time, reflecting on a website I frequently visit, I recognized areas where usability could be improved, particularly in navigation and responsive design, understanding the necessity for web developers to prioritize user experience. In summary, this week's blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills has provided me with tools to understand and challenge the digital structures that shape our world, fostering a critical approach to technology.
